"Logansteno: Bought a VW?" (logansteno)

Was nice (to drive).
The 190hp 4.3 feels like a V8 compared to the Safari’s 160hp 4.3. The 4.10 rear end probably helped.
No way in hell im buying the one I looked at though. The body was clean but the whole underside was rust. Nothing but rust. The engine had a squeak, something whined taking off from a stop, the backrest adjustment on the driver’s seat was gone, as was the 3rd door’s handle. No way it was worth $5k.
At least I accomplished what I want to accomplish: drive one. And I came away really liking it. So that pretty much locked in me wanting one.
I don’t have time before work to go to carmax though :( I’ll have to save that adventure for Monday.

GM trucks of that era have the smallest airbag wheels ever. Why other cars can't have them that small is a mystery.

Everyone is driving small V6 trucks and I’m sitting here with a 2.2L 4 pot

A few years ago my sister had a S10 with Z71 off road package or whatever, they traded it in for $3,000. I should have bought it but wasn't ready to give up the metro. I am now though.

Hey don’t feel bad, that 2.2 would murder my 3.0 V6 in a straight line.

FYI every S10 or Sonoma you look at will have that handle broken off the seat. Literally every single one. If it’s not already broken, that’s a miracle in itself. But it’ll break soon. They’re guaranteed points of failure for some reason. The metal behind the handle breaks and the handle just falls off. Mine is laying in the door pocket.

Hey, I can respect a good peg leg burnout! I only have a 2l turbo myself, but it’s a hatch not a truck.

I sold my Sonoma for less than that and it was in great running shape. That truck bled my wallet dry fixing so much stuff. Be sure you buy one that is well sorted out, or you’ll regret it. And enjoy trying to change the plugs on that thing!

The seat back angle adjuster will be broken on all of them, as will the 3rd door handle. On my ‘98 I used a small pair of vice grips to adjust the seat back angle, and a flat-head screwdriver to pop open the 3rd door. They’re excellent little trucks, so take the time to find a nice one.

If I've changed plugs on a 4.3 Safari, I can change plugs on anything. And the worst S10 is still better than what I've gone through with the M3.

Yeah there is a kit to replace it with a machined steel or aluminum part that is a lot nicer. But they all break. Mine was broken by 70,000 miles I think.
